Island Hop with Us: 5 Unexplored Aegean Gems You Can't-Miss! ☀️
Ditch the crowds and discover the hidden treasures of the Aegean. Grab a cold brew, and let's dive into our handpicked list of five islands that are way off the tourist trail. These islands offer an escape from life's frenetic pace, inviting you to chill, breathe deeply, and enjoy every second of life. Get back to the roots of humanity and enjoy the simple pleasures—the warmth of the sun, the taste of fresh food, and the locals who are there to immerse you in their culture.
1. Koufonisia: A Pair of Paradises
Go back in time when visiting Koufonisia. No car is needed, just a comfy pair of sneakers. It takes 3 hours to walk around Ano Koufonisi, but trust us; you will be mesmerized by the natural beauty and friendliness of the people. If you fancy a faster pace ride, rent a bicycle and enjoy the island's hills. Across is Kato Koufonisi, the hippier version—camping, no electricity, no residents, and one small tavern.
Any day can start by waking up, putting on your bathing suit, grabbing a beach towel, stopping at the first café for a coffee/tea and a pastry, and then the island is yours to explore. You can stroll along picturesque paths, dive in the Aegean's turquoise waters, and find an idyllic secluded beach to read a book or take that perfect Instagram picture; why not both?
Ano Koufonisi: Travel back in time to postcard-perfect beaches (Pori, Foinikas, Fanos), crystal-clear water (Nero), and small local taverns.
Kato Koufonisi: Hop on a boat or do a quick mini-marathon swim (about 0.12 miles) from Ano Koufonisi to the even smaller island Kato Koufonisi. 🏊♀️
Local Tip
Don't miss the natural swimming pool! It's like Mother Nature's own infinity pool. Pro-tip: if you can hold your breath long enough, you can swim out of the pool and into the Aegean Sea.
There is a cross from Ano to Kato Koufonisi, which is about 0.12 miles, and it makes for a great swim
2. Sikinos: Time Travel & Taste Buds 🕰️🍇
Welcome to island life as it used to be! With only 250 locals, it's all about chill vibes, remains of ancient settlements, Byzantine churches, canyons, and remote beaches. In Sikinos’s main village, cobblestone paths lined with vibrant bougainvilleas lead you past houses with blue shutters and small cafés that invite you to savor a cup of strong Greek iced coffee and a piece of freshly baked dessert. Manalis, the Island’s most famous local winery, offers views of pure magic – sunset, wine, and local mezédes is a win, win, win situation.
Malta, Agios Georgios, Dialiskari: Explore charming villages and unspoiled beaches.
Local Tip
Local legend has it that if a couple drinks from the Bounamas water fountain, they stay together forever.
Hike down to Deutera Parousia for a hidden chapel with a serious wow factor!
3. Anafi: Santorini's Secret Sister 🤫
Same stunning caldera views, a fraction of the crowds and cost. Untouched by time is a small island of special natural beauty, with deep green waters, golden sands, and a pure white Chora. Suitable for all who wish for peaceful holidays in a welcoming environment. In Chora, the streets are lined with vibrant flowers and quaint tavernas; in the afternoon, the aroma of freshly baked bread (yes, there’s a bread theme) and grilled seafood tempt you to stop and savor local flavors. Beaches offer golden sands and crystal-clear waters; the water is calm, refreshing, and inviting for a leisure swim or snorkeling adventure.
Vrysi (Agios Georgios), Prasies, Megalos Roukounas: Your new favorite beach names.
Local Tip
Eat like a local! Anemos serves the freshest seafood, and Margarita's breakfast with Anafi honey is legendary. 🍯
4. Patmos: Where History & Holiness Meet 🙏
Nicknamed the "Jerusalem of the Aegean," this UNESCO World Heritage site was a must for history buffs and spiritual seekers till a decade ago. Nowadays, Patmos is an off-the-beaten path that many locals prefer due to the mix of secluded coves, vibrant beach bar scenes, and everything in between. The sun sets more often than not, casting a golden glow over the island, you savor the island's tranquil beauty and profound serenity. Late in the evening in Skala - the island’s main port - the ambiance is intimate and welcoming, and the waterfront venues offer a mix of traditional Greek music and modern beats.
Agriolivado, Petra/Kallikatsou, Psili Ammos: Beaches with biblical beauty.
Local Tip
Explore the Cave of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian—they're kind of a big deal.
5. Kimolos: Caribbean Vibes and Hikes in the Aegean? 🏝️
White sands, turquoise waters... you might think you're in the tropics! Hike to hidden coves, feast on fresh seafood, and watch sunsets that rival Santorini's. One of the most exciting ways to get to know a place is to hike it, and Kimolos lends itself to this as an ancient network of paths runs through the island. The Archaeological Museum offers a glimpse into the island’s rich history and cultural heritage, telling you a story that deepens your appreciation for Kimolos’ past and present.
Prassa, Prasonisi, Aliki, Monastiria: Each beach has its own unique charm.
Local Tip
Take a boat trip to the nearby islands of Agios Georgios and Poliegos – they're even less discovered, and offer the ability to walk and explore untapped beaches and calderas of unmatched beauty.
Don’t forget to try out Ladenia (a local type of pizza)!
Happy Travels! 🗺️
