The closest thing to the fountain of youth - 4 days in Ikaría (Blue Zone)

Ikaría: 4 Days in a Blue Zone! ☀️ 💙

Ikaría is one of the world's five blue zones. Blue Zones are regions where people tend to live longer and healthier lives than average, with high numbers of centenarians. So get ready to hit the pause button in your life! ⏯️ Let your feet touch the sand and embrace life at .5x speed.

Picture this: sunny days with random wind spurts, laid-back vibes, and locals who have mastered the art of chilling. Locals are used to a very slow pace (due to necessity), till a few years ago visiting Ikaria took 12 hours by ferry, and plane rides were rare.

The sweet spot to visit is late July, the island is vibing hard and not crazy crowded. ☮️ Hitch-hiking is a thing so help a fellow human and seize some good karma.

The best time to visit is the first 15 days of August, but don’t, unless you're an early bird who loves a challenge (finding parking, we're looking at you 🚗). Trust us, scoring a spot at the best beaches in August is like winning the lottery! 🎰

Ikaría - top-8 🏖️

Day 1: Explore the unexplored - Nas beach

Sooooo Nas Beach is like that super hot ex: insanely beautiful but with a bit of a wild side. It’s been voted the most dangerous beach in Greece, and I really have no clue why this happened, aside from “insidious” currents that can sweep you toward Turkey for free 😂 - joking aside avoid Nas when northerly winds blow.

When it’s calm, Nas is pure magic! Imagine this - soft sand, cute pebbles, and scenery so stunning, you’ll think the sun is about to hug you. The best hour is the golden hour - sunset, you’ll feel that the sun is within arm’s reach. It's the perfect spot for a spontaneous jam session with a bunch of guitar-toting locals. Don't be shy, join in! They'll be stoked. 🎸

Day 2: Visit Seychelles beach

Start your day early, pack water, ample sunscreen (high SPF), snacks, and get ready to be mesmerized. Try to park and be ready to hike down by 10 am the latest. And If you love colorful sunrises on a secluded beach this is the time to get up early. “The excitement I had hiking down to the beach was a feeling that I hadn’t felt since I was a teenager” a tourist confined to us the last time we were there.

Local tips:

Grab a spot as close to the rock as possible - you can thank us later 😉

If you don’t like hiking, boat services exist that can take you to Seychelles and pick you up on a set cadence.

By lunchtime (Greek lunch time aka 3 to 5 pm), you’ll be ready to head out. Pick your car up and head to “Vasilis Tavern” restaurant, don’t ask questions, just do it. 😎 A family-run restaurant, amid green trees, a nice breeze, and the most genuine service. If you miss this place you won’t get the full Ikaría experience.

Day 3: Get ready to mingle and enjoy a Greek Panigýri

My friend if you’ve never been to a Greek Panigýri get ready; put your dancing, eating, and drinking shoes on (yes it’s the same shoe). This isn't just a party; it's a full-blown explosion of joy, food, and dance. Imagine hundreds of strangers bonding over raucous clapping, crazy dancing, and endless shots of wine (or your poison of choice). 💃🕺

Ikaria isn't just about chill vibes and long life; it's a Panigýri powerhouse! We're talking about 90+ mind-boggling parties between June and August! So, whether you're a seasoned party animal or just looking to let loose, there's a Panigýri waiting to sweep you off your feet. Trust me, you'll be shouting "geia mas" (cheers!) with the best of them in no time. 🍻

Panigýri tend to start from 6 pm going all the way to 5-6 am, just a quick little party thrown together 😉

Day 4: Take everything in and embrace the newfound energy

Mesakti, is my favorite beach in Ikaría! That's where magic happens. Forget fancy, crowded beaches. Mesakti is the real deal. Sand so soft you could do a cartwheel without a scratch. Water so clear, you'll think you're swimming in a giant fishbowl. And sunsets? Oh, the sunsets! They're like a free light show, every night!

It can get a bit packed in August, but don't let that put you off. There's always a secret spot to be found. Just keep your eyes peeled for those sneaky sea turtles. They're like the beach's VIPs. And hey, while you're at it, don't be a beach bum. Help keep it clean for the next wave of sunseekers, alright?

For the 🏄️s the nearby beach “Armenistis” takes surfing to a whole new level. You ain't gonna find any crowded line-ups or fake tan dudes here. The waves are more like old friends - sometimes they're chill and easygoing, other times they'll test ya. But that's the beauty of it, it's like dancing with nature.
